Custom Walk-In Closet & Primary Bathroom Reconfiguration in Overland Park, KS
KC Handyman reconfigured a primary bathroom and adjoining vanity area in Overland Park, Kansas, to create a larger walk-in closet with a custom-designed, hand-built storage system. The renovation combined doorway and wall changes, new rough plumbing, vanity refinishing, tile work, and complete wall and ceiling finishing.
Before: A Separate Vanity Area and Smaller Closet
The original layout placed the vanity outside the main bathroom, beside the existing closet and bathroom entrance. Creating a larger master closet required changing how these spaces connected. The plan relocated the vanity into the bathroom and moved the bathroom doorway, allowing the original entrance wall to be closed and incorporated into the new closet footprint.
During: Reframing, Plumbing and Bathroom Updates
KC Handyman reframed the walls and doorway openings to establish the new layout. New rough plumbing served the relocated vanity. The existing vanity cabinetry was repainted and installed in its new bathroom location, retaining useful cabinetry while giving it a coordinated new finish.
The old framed-in Jacuzzi tub was replaced with a freestanding tub, and the floor beneath the former tub enclosure was retiled. Drywall installation and finishing, texturing, and painting of the walls and ceiling completed the changes to the room surfaces.
Custom Closet Construction
With the new closet footprint established, KC Handyman custom-designed and hand-built the shelving and drawer system to fit the space. Built-ins wrap around three sides of the closet, combining hanging sections, open shelving, corner storage, and a central bank of drawers.
The construction photos show the storage system taking shape before its painted finish and drawer fronts were completed. Building to the room’s dimensions allowed the shelves, hanging areas, and drawers to work together as one integrated system.
After: A Larger Walk-In Closet with Hand-Built Storage
The finished closet features painted built-ins, multiple hanging sections, tall shelving towers, and six central drawers with metal pulls. Open shelves provide accessible storage around the drawer cabinet and along both sides of the room.
Relocating the vanity and reworking the entrance made room for this expanded storage layout. The result brings the bathroom and closet together through a more practical use of the existing space, with custom carpentry tailored to the new footprint.
